Special Seasonal Events Lent 2010

Lenten Taizé Services

Wednesday evenings, February 24, March 3, 10, 17, and 24 at 7pm in the Sanctuary

The brothers of the tiny village of Taize, France have a mission—to be a welcoming community for young people of all nations to gather in peace and contemplation.  They have developed a style of worship that incorporates prayer through song and silence and the spoken word.

Brother Roger wrote, “Prayer is a serene force at work within human beings, stirring them up, transforming them, never allowing them to close their eyes in the face of evil, of wars, of all that threatens the weak of this world.  From it we draw the energy to wage other struggles—to enable our loved ones to survive, to transform the human condition, to make the earth a place fit to live in.”  May this time of worship strengthen us to walk in the footsteps of the Risen Christ.

Lenten Taizé -style worship services at Newark United Methodist Church are held on the five Wednesday evenings between Ash Wednesday and Holy Week.  All are welcome.

Next WABS Study starts February 17, 2010

A Clearing Season, by Sarah Parsons

"To many, Lent is simply a time to "give up" something that they enjoy. They see it as a seemingly long purposeless time of self-denial. But A Clearing Season rebuffs that notion looking at Lent from a new perspective....

"You hear about devout friends giving up seemingly innocent things in life (like chocolate) or stressing out to live a more perfect life during six grueling weeks — for reasons you don't completely understand. Sermons about penitence are preached, and guilt soaks the congregation....

"Sound like a good time?! It's time to rethink Lent.

"Or at least see it for the positive opportunity it offers. It's spring-cleaning for the soul! Lent offers you time to pause, consider, and renew your relationship with God — an altogether hopeful (not dreary) experience....

"Sure, there's work to be done during Lent, but it's the gentle, gradual work of opening one's heart and mind to grace. A Clearing Season will move you week by week from "wilderness to holy ground," using a personal tone that will stir and challenge personal reflection."
