Sanctuaries - Basic Policies
The Newark United Methodist Church community strives to adhere to the following Safe Sanctuaries policies whenever it is possible and practical to do so:
- Two-adult Rule: Whenever possible, two adults will be present with a child/youth or group of children/youth at all times.
- Non-related adults Rule: The two adults present with a child/youth/group should be unrelated.
- Six Months Rule: Persons volunteering to teach/lead will have been present among the church community for at least six months.
- Five Years Older Rule: Leaders and teachers will be at least five years older than those whom they lead or teach.
- No Under 18 Rule: No one under the age of eighteen will have primary responsibility for children of any age.
- Open-door Counseling Rule: Persons qualified to offer counseling to children and/or youth will do so in a room having an open door.
- Windows will be available in all classroom doors.
- First-aid and CPR trained persons will be readily available at all functions where children and youth are present.
- Advance notice will be given to parents and permission secured from parents for all events and activities held outside church property.
- A Safe Sanctuaries Covenant will be completed by all present and potential leaders/teachers.
- Parents and families will be educated concerning the program.
- Equipment will be appropriate for the age level of the program participants.
- Adequate supervision will be available for children/youth at all times.
- Adequate insurance coverage will be secured for the scope of ministries.
