NUMC's Initial Habitat House Dedicated

December 12, 1999

Dorothy and her three daughters will soon be able to move into a new home of their own, thanks in part to the contributions--both volunteer time and money--of Newark United Methodist Church toward the building of one of six row homes at 8th and Morrow St. in Wilmington. NUMC led a coalition of Newark-area churches in sponsoring the building of Dorothy's home.

After almost two years in planning, fund raising, and construction, the initial NUMC-sponsored Habitat House is nearly complete.

On December 12, 1999, volunteers, sponsors, and future homeowners alike gathered at West Presbyterian Church, just a couple blocks away from the project, to give thanks and praise to God and formally dedicate the six row homes--the first multiple-home project Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County has undertaken.

After a letter of congratulations from Congressman Michael N. Castle was read, Wilmington Mayor James Sills spoke of the need for more urban efforts like this--that combine both the resources and cooperation of the public, private, and non-profit sectors of our community. After representatives of house sponsors Chase Manhattan Bank, the Newark Church Coalition, Westminster Presbyterian Church, and Wilmington Friends School spoke, Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County Director Kevin Smith recognized the efforts of volunteers and partners. The new homeowners were then congratulated for their efforts ("sweat equity") in building their own homes with Habitat, given Bibles, and then invited to say a few words themselves.

Those gathered then walked to the building site, where each of the houses (and families) was blessed by NUMC Associate Pastor Leslie Slak.
