Christian Education for All Ages
Church School and Worship Schedule
The goal of the Church School program at Newark United Methodist Church is clear: to teach of God's love for each child and to show them how to live as God's people.
Because our culture puts more pressure on families now than at any other time in memory, the Christian Education Team focuses on trying to help each other and the congregation navigate living as today's people of God. One Christian education leader explains, "We help families to get the faith perspective on how to deal with today's life. We're in the midst of a consumerist age, but we stress things like reaching out to other people, instead of thinking about what we're going to get. We teach Christian community--the Christ-like life."
In addition to sharing Bible stories and the history of Methodism, the children participate in service by bringing food for the Newark Area Welfare Committee's Food Cupboard, housed at NUMC, saving and contributing coins for the United Methodist Church's Board of Child Care, as well as other projects that support our community and outreach programs.
Special events are sponsored by the Christian Education Team throughout the year. In June, students who have completed second grade are given Bibles because United Methodists believe everyone should have access to the Word of God. In December, the entire congregation is invited to participate in a "Greening of the Church," for which the emphasis is on preparing our homes and lives for the coming of Christ. Summer Bible Camp gives children an intense week of fun and learning in the summer.
The needs of adults are considered, too. Church School classes invite adults to be transformed as they are inspired and challenges to know and experience God through Jesus Christ, claim and live God's promises, and grow and serve as Christian disciples. Additionally, this church offers both long- and short-term courses and study groups for adults as need and interest intersect.
